What Is a Salt Chlorinator?

A salt chlorinator helps maintain healthy, sanitised pool water by generating chlorine from salt or minerals. After your pool filter removes organic material, the chlorinator eliminates bacteria and algae — providing consistent, automatic sanitation.

Salt chlorinators are the most widely used pool sanitising method in Australia and are quickly growing in popularity worldwide.

AstralPool chlorinators work with both salt and mineral systems and are proudly Australian-made.

  • Salt chlorinators use electrolysis to convert dissolved salt into sodium hypochlorite, a safe and stable form of chlorine.

    Process Summary

    • Add salt to the pool (4,000 ppm).
    • The chlorinator, installed after the filter, runs water through an electrolytic cell.
    • Electricity causes a chemical reaction that splits the salt into sodium and chlorine.
    • The chlorine becomes sodium hypochlorite, which sanitises the water.
    • Over time, it reverts back to salt and the cycle continues.

You can program desired settings from the control panel. The chlorinator typically runs daily, with the exact timing based on pool size and usage.

Note: You may still require chemicals to adjust pH levels or manage mineral content.
